A watching brief was undertaken by Mike C Bishop of the Archaeological Practice Ltd during the laying of a new water pipe along the route of an older one 16-19 December 1991. The pipeline ran from a man-hole cover south of the B6318 to another man-hole cover south-west of the western barn at Rudchester Farm. The following archaeological features were revealed during the course of the investigation: gutter blocks; evidence of buildings, comprising a possible threshold block and east-west foundations; flagged flooring, possibly indicative of the interior of a building; a road surface, possibly that of the via sagularis; and possible remains of the vicus.
